A life long dream to raise alpacas came true 5 1/2 years ago when my husband found a herd needing a new home. We knew absolutely nothing about caring for alpacas but took advantage of the opportunity.

Over the last 5 years, we experienced tragic loss and unbridled joy. We learned a lot over the years and fell in love with these beautiful, sensitive, and shy animals.
I learned how to process their amazing fiber which is lighter, repels water better, and I argue is warmer than sheep’s wool. They learned that at least some humans can be trusted.
A few weeks ago, our beloved Cocoa died from apparent complications of pregnancy. Cocoa was Zeus’ momma and we looked forward to welcoming another member of the herd.

I love them all but Zeus has a special place in my heart. Born on Webb Acres, Zeus ran up to greet me every time I walked through into the pasture. Jim Bob called Zeus a lady’s man. He liked to kiss my cheek and sniff my hair, occasionally pulling it playfully. I liked to rub his head and stroke the soft thick hair on his back.
Due to recent unanticipated life changes, as well as the loss of Cocoa, we made the painful decision to rehome our herd of alpacas. We learned and gained so much from these critters and while sorry they are no longer part of Webb Acres, I am confident that they will be well taken care of in their new home and bring joy to others.

After they left, Jim Bob said it is sad that they are no longer here but it is a different sadness from our grief over Cocoa’s death. And I agree that the emptiness is different.
I wonder if they will remember us if we go to New Mexico to visit some day. Then again, it might be too difficult to see them only to say goodbye again.
